Anna's
Vineyard was the brainchild of Anna Stehr who wanted to
do something to rehabilitate and make better use of
vacant land behind the Stehr Group's property on Proper
Bay Road.
Mrs Stehr believes in organic growing methods and was
passionate about applying these techniques to the
vineyard, which is exactly what vineyard managers
Michelle & Ralph Mason have done.
"It
makes the wine special - clean and pure tasting."
(Anna Stehr)
Wine
growers Thomas Lefebvre
use various plants and herbs to encourage healthy growth
from the vetch (which is mulched to provide nitrogen) to
the garlic, basil and marigolds planted as insect
repellents. Other natural products used to protect the
vines include powdered milk and chamomile tea.
Although organic
viticulture is labour intensive, it works well for
Anna's Vineyard because of its size. Anna's Vineyard has
only 0.75 acres of wine grapes. This means that it is
possible to practice intensive viticulture and all work
on the vines is done by hand.

"At Anna's Vineyard we aim for
quality, not quantity." (Ralph
Mason)
|
The first vintage in 2001
produced only 2000 bottles of wine, with subsequent 2002
and 2003 vintages producing 1200 and 1300 bottles
respectively.
|
|
"We are incredibly proud to win
a medal with our very first vintage."
|
The 2001, 2002 and 2003
vintages have all been awarded 3 stars in the Top new Release
category by the prestigious Winestate magazine. Our 2004
vintage is yet to be judged, but we are confident that
it will do very well.

|
"The 2004
vintage is a winner. Honey and sweet cherry aroma with a
lingering savoury finish."
(Michelle Mason)

Anna's Vineyard 2005 Liqueur Shiraz |
Liqueur or vintage shiraz
(as it is referred to in the wine world) is made with
the current year’s (or new) wine as opposed to port,
sherry, muscat, etc. that are produced from wine two
years or older.
Anna’s Vineyard 2005 Liqueur has been made with
organically grown, extremely ripe shiraz grapes.
Liqueur Shiraz is quite rare because it is very
difficult to nurse the fruit to the required sugar level without the grapes suffering disease
(mainly gray mould fungus) or being attacked by pests
(birds, rodents, and insects) who are attracted to the
high sugar content of the grapes. It is especially
difficult to reach this level of ripeness using organic
growing methods. |
Our 2005 liqueur has been made with a base of
white cherry vodka, which is odorless,
colourless, and tasteless but still provides the
alcoholic “kick” required from a liqueur.
Although our winemaker needed to obtain a
special licence to produce the liqueur this way,
Anna’s Vineyard viticulturists felt that this
very special shiraz should be allowed to display
its wonderful berry taste.
The natural sweetness of the incredibly mature
fruit does not have to compete with a strong
tasting brandy or rum base, as is often used in
the making of ports and other fortifieds. |
 |
|
Only 5300 bottles of
liqueur have been produced and each one has been
individually numbered, making them a rare edition to
your cellar.
As with most vintage liqueurs, Anna’s Vineyard 2005
Shiraz have been designed to bottle age and will keep on
getting better and better for up to 70 years.
